Get Dog Pee Out of the Carpet

So how does it feel to be a dog parent? It’s a cosmic love and possibly the best feeling in life that no dog lover would ever deny. Living with this adorable, fury kid is a huge adventure but it can also get a bit messy at times. No matter how well-behaved your four-legged family member is, uh oh! when your dog pees on the carpet, you will be dumbfounded. You might think of scolding but those innocent puppy eyes! How can you be angry? Unfortunately, dog peeing on the carpet is a big problem as it leaves stubborn stains and smells worse.

Though it is not every time possible to stop your dog from peeing, it is still possible to clean the mess from the carpet. If you do not react immediately, the stains will become difficult to tackle while the odor may increase and spread all over in your home. Sometimes the urine may also seep down into the carpet padding and damage it.

Accidents do happen and your furry pal cannot be blamed. But you don’t have to feel upset about your beloved carpet getting spoiled as the stains can get easily vanished by following the best cleaning hacks.

Here are some quick and proven methods for cleaning up the pet urine stains and saving your favorite carpet:

When the stain is fresh

Act immediately

Even when you catch them in the middle of an act, you cannot stop them. The only way out is to get going instantly with the cleaning business. Place several layers of paper towels over the wet carpet or use an old t-shirt or terry cloth towel. Dab and remove the excess moisture. Walking on the paper towels or standing on it for a minute or two will also help to absorb pet pee as much as possible.

To prevent the smell, rinse the urinated area with clean water and blot it dry.

When the pee stain is already set

Create vinegar and baking soda solution

Both vinegar and baking soda are effective and non-toxic house cleaning agents, easily found in every household. To get rid of the pet urine stains, you need to:

  • Mix together – 2 cups of vinegar, 2 cups of warm water along with 4 tablespoons of baking soda
  • Pour this solution into a spray bottle and shake well
  • Now sprinkle it on the peed carpet area
  • Make sure the solution completely neutralizes the area. Let it get absorbed for around 5 to 10 minutes
  • Later, blot it with a paper towel or soft cloth (If required, you can lightly scrub the area before blotting)

In case, the stains are too stubborn, directly sprinkle baking soda powder on the wet area. Then, pour the solution of vinegar and warm water (50% each). Let it sit and get absorbed (leave it for 5 minutes). Later, blot it dry with a clean cloth.

To remove the bad odor

After the cleaning process when the carpet becomes dry (it might take several hours), sprinkle some baking soda on the carpet area. Leave it for at least 24 hours. This will deodorize the carpet and remove the pet urine smell from your carpet.

You can also use any high-quality pet odor neutralizer, if the urine odor is too strong and lingering.

Create a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and liquid dishwashing soap

Another DIY remedy to get rid of pet pee stains out of carpet is by using a blend of effective cleaning ingredients – hydrogen peroxide and liquid dishwashing soap.

  • Mix one part of hydrogen peroxide with one part of water and few drops of liquid dishwashing soap
  • First sprinkle the baking soda on the wet area and then sprinkle the solution created
  • Gently scrub the stain
  • Let the solution go deep and sit for around 10 minutes
  • Blot dry with a towel
  • Use a vacuum and dry the carpet

If the stains are quite stubborn, repeat the complete process again.

Another homemade remedy

Another easy DIY solution to get the pet stains out of carpet is

  • Prepare a solution by mixing ½ cup of vinegar, 1 tablespoon of salt and 1 tablespoon dish detergent in 2 cups water
  • Take a soft sponge dip it into the solution and apply it on the stained carpet area
  • Blot the area dry with a clean towel
  • If you still notice the stain, repeat the process

Handy tools

Apart from the created solutions, the right tools will help you more to get rid of the stains. For dried urine or even poop, dish sponge works best on the carpet fibers. An old rag can also be used as an alternative.

Another affordable and efficient tool for cleaning stain is soft bristled toothbrush. Gently scrubbing with it will help to eliminate the stains without damaging the carpet. Wear gloves to protect your skin if you are using any chemical to clean the carpet and also a face mask to save yourself from odor.

Use commercial pet stain cleaners

If homemade cleaners do not make any difference then try using commercial pet stain removers. They will work better on stains. Whatever commercial carpet cleaner you use, make sure it is non-toxic and pet-friendly. Also, go for the one that best suits your carpet material.

Enzymatic pet stain remover is a good option as they are safe to use on carpet and can also fight odor in no time. They are easily available in any pet store or even the local grocery store. Read the instructions properly written on the bottle before using a commercial pet stain remover.

What to avoid?
  • Do not use a steam cleaner to remove urine smell from the carpet as there are possibilities that the heat may cause the stain and odor to become permanent
  • Also, avoid using chemicals like ammonia to clean the carpet
What if nothing works?

Don’t worry if none of the above cleaning methods work, your carpet can still be saved. If the stains are stubborn the smell still continues to bother you, better hire a professional cleaning service.
