When you hear baking soda, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? I am sure, you must be thinking of baking cakes, cookies, muffins. Yes, it is indeed a prime ingredient included in baking basics. But there are some benefits of baking soda that you might not be aware of.

Baking soda is one of the powerful natural cleaning agents. Right from cleaning tile floors to jewelry, carpets to upholstery, baking soda is really effective. Modern cleaning solutions contain harmful chemicals which can be destructive to fabrics. Hence for carpet cleaning, baking soda is the best choice. It is affordable too as compared to commercial cleaning products.

Sodium bicarbonate, commonly known as baking soda is a non-poisonous and natural cleaning agent. Along with cleaning, baking soda is a good disinfectant and also freshens the space or substance on which you are using it. Baking soda easily removes dirt, grease, and stubborn stains. Carpet cleaning with baking soda  

Foot traffic, muddy carpets, pet stains, greasy stains, smelly carpets, baking soda will come in handy to clean every sort of stain from the carpet. It is safe on fabrics and also doesn’t cause any harm to pets and humans as well. 

Important step to take before cleaning the carpet with baking soda 

Before you start cleaning, make sure the dry dust and dirt are completely removed from the carpet. Use a vacuum to eliminate loose particles and dirt. This will make the cleaning process a bit easy. 

Process to create baking soda carpet cleaner 

To create a baking soda carpet cleaner, you can either mix baking soda with plain water or if the stains are tough, you can blend dishwashing liquid soap or vinegar. 

We recommend you to use fresh baking soda removed from a new carton for better results. 

Method 1 – Direct baking soda treatment  

  • Directly sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda on the carpet area. In case if the carpet is large, divide the cleaning process into sections
  • Make sure the baking soda completely covers the carpet
  • Now take a dry brush and start scrubbing. Ensure the baking soda reaches the deepest fibers of the carpet. You can also opt for an old t-shirt or sponge
  • It should be evenly spread across the carpet
  • Let the baking soda soak into the carpet for several hours. If possible, leave it overnight for the best results. The longer you keep, the better are the results
  • Gradually, baking soda will neutralize and absorb the odor if any 
  • Now it’s time to remove the baking soda. Use a vacuum to do so.
  • Vacuum slowly and gradually on each section of carpet, ensuring no particles is left behind
  • You’ll notice the solution coming up right away and the carpet appearing cleaner
  • If the baking soda is still visible, continue with another round of vacuuming

Note – Baking soda tends to become clumpy. Hence, it is better to transfer it to a large shaker, to help you sprinkle it more evenly on the carpet.

Method 2 – Baking soda and vinegar 

Now comes the real rockstars of home cleaning, the indisputable combination of baking soda and vinegar. Baking soda has great absorbing properties while the acidic properties of vinegar can effortlessly remove the toughest stains from fabric. So this makes the best carpet cleaning combination.

What will you require:

  • Paper towels
  • Bucket/spray bottle
  • Vacuum
  • Water – 2 cups 
  • Vinegar – 2 cups  
  • Baking soda

Cleaning technique:

  • Gently blot the stain with a paper towel. Make sure just to blot, rubbing can spread the stains more
  • Either use an empty spray bottle or a bucket to create a blend of water and vinegar
  • Soak the carpet stains with this solution. In case of stains that are tough, scrub a bit hard to remove the stains
  • Now comes baking soda in the picture. Pour baking soda on the stained spots. Better do it when the carpet area is wet.   
  • If you want, you just pour a few drops of vinegar. Gently, scrub the baking soda and make sure it goes deep into the fiber
  • Let the baking soda soak into the carper overnight. Let it dry off completely
  • The next day, use a vacuum to remove the baking soda from the carpet  
  • If the baking soda is still visible, continue with another round of vacuuming
  • Once the baking soda is completely removed from the carpet, you’ll notice how clean the carpet has turned

Method 3 – Baking soda and carpet shampoo 

Note – Before using carpet shampoo always do a spot test to ensure if the cleaning solution does not cause any discoloration or damages to the carpet fiber.

  • Pour carpet shampoo or wash the carpet with this solution 
  • Let the carpet dry before you apply the baking soda
  • You can remove the excess moisture by blotting it with a paper towel
  • You can repeat the steps until you see the stains getting a bit lightened
  • Use a whisk to mix the baking soda to make sure there are no lumps
  • Now put a liberal amount of baking soda on the carpet 
  • Let it settle down on the carpet overnight or around 24 hours 
  • Vacuum and remove the baking soda completely from the carpet
  • Your carpet will now appear spotless

For fresh smelling carpet

The aromatic smell of essential oils can help you to eradicate the odor. You can add around 10 drops of any of your favorite flavor of essential oil to the baking soda solution while cleaning. It will freshen up space. The natural chemical components of essential oil not only deodorize the carpet but also disinfects.

Just a sprinkle of baking soda can work wonders. It is the smartest and safest way of cleaning the carpet. You can do a routine carpet sprinkling (once or twice a month) to keep the carpet fresh and clean.
